Getting Started with Pinterest Ads

Start by setting up a business account and choosing your budget to set spending limits for your ads. Before you can start posting ads on Pinterest, you’ll need to do the following:

  • Have the pin saved on your business profile to a public board.
  • Have a destination URL included but not a link shortener.
  • The post cannot be a third-party video or GIF.
  • Ensure the post is compliant with Pinterest’s Ad Standards

As a general role, Pinterest recommends using a 2:3 aspect ratio or 1000 x 1500 pixels for ad posts. Pins with a ratio of more than 2:4.2 will be cropped on user feeds.

Pinterest Ad Sizing and Specs for 2024

Pinterest has 6 different types of ads: standard image, shopping, video, carousel, idea, and showcase. Video ads can be made to either a standard or max width.

1. Pinterest Standard Image Ads

These Pinterest ads feature only one image and can be used in paid ad campaigns or to promote organic impressions for your business account. The title can be up to 100 characters, and the description is how Pinterest’s algorithm determines the relevancy of the ad to find the right audience.

File type: PNG or JPEG

Max file size: 20 MB for desktop, 32MB for in-app

Aspect ratio: 2:3, aspects greater than this will be cropped.

File dimensions: 1000 x 1500 pixels.

2. Pinterest Shopping Ads

Shopping ads follow the same Pinterest ad specs and sizing as standard image ads. They feature one image and allow users to purchase products with a link to the product page on your brand’s website or a third-party platform. Shopping ads are ideal for engaging with customers early in their journey with your business.

You do not need to set up additional targeting for shopping ads. Pinterest will use data from the product source to advertise it to relevant users.

3. Standard-Width Video Ads

Standard-width video ads on Pinterest are the same size as regular pins. They can be used to generate organic impressions for a business account or as part of a paid ad campaign. 

File type: MOV, MP4 or M4V.

Max file size: up to 2GB

Video length: 4 seconds to 15 minutes

Aspect ratio: Pinterest recommends 1:1 or a vertical aspect ratio, such as 2:3, 9:16, or 4:5.

Video ads can have a description of up to 500 characters, influencing the users the algorithm shows your ad to. 

4. Max Width Video Ads

Unlike standard-width video ads, max-width video ads are only available as paid ads and expand across a user’s entire feed within the Pinterest app.

File type: MOV, MP4 or M4V.

Max file size: up to 2GB

Video length: 4 seconds to 15 minutes

Aspect ratio: cannot exceed the height of a 1:1 ratio.

5. Carousel Ads

Carousel ads are one of the most popular ad formats, including on Meta platforms. This ad features multiple images, usually showcasing specific products or collections. These ads can be used for organic traffic or as paid ads. 

File type: PNG or JPEG

Max file size: 20 MB per picture

Maximum images: 2 to 5 per carousel

Aspect ratio: 1:1 or 2:3

6. Idea Ads

Idea ads are the most creative option for Pinterest ads as they allow you to utilise a mixture of custom text, images, lists, and videos within a single pin. An organic pin can be promoted as an ad in certain countries. 

Pinterest recommends only promoting pins with music from its music library. You can turn an organic pin into an Idea ad or create an Idea ad within your Pinterest Ads Manager profile. Idea ads are ideal for paid partnerships with creators, as your business can then promote the pin.

File type: BMP, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, and WEBP for image. MP4, MOV, and M4V for video.

Max file size: 100MB on desktop but 2 GB on Pinterest app.

Video length: maximum 5-minute duration.

Aspect ratio: 9:16, but no restrictions. Pinterest recommends 1080 x 1920 pixels for full-bleed images and videos.

7. Showcase Ads

A Showcase ad on Pinterest is a multi-format ad with several swipeable cards. You can add up to three features with outbound links to your product, website, or other destinations. These pins can only be used in paid ad campaigns.  

File type: BMP, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, and WEBP.

Max file size: up to 32MB.

Video length: videos should be 3 to 60 seconds.

File specs: Pinterest recommends 1000 x 1500 pixels for full-bleed images and videos.

Aspect ratio: 2:3 ratio for title pin and card, with 1:1 static for feature pin. 

You can use up to four cards, along with the primary title pin, in a Showcase ad with up to 3 feature pins per ad. Pinterest recommends avoiding putting any text or important information in the bottom 80px of Showcase ads to prevent them from being obscured by UI elements.
